Roots of Islam

| Arabian Peninsula | a peninsula between the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf consisting of mostly desert |
| Bedouin | Nomadic desert dwellers in the Arabian Peninsula |
| Mecca | Arabia's most important city and the birth place of Muhammad. |
| Muhammad | The prophet of Islam that united Arabia under the monotheistic religion. |
| Quran | The holy book of Islam that contains the flawless words of Allah. |
| monotheism | belief in only one god |
| Mosque | A Muslim place of worship and the center of every Islamic community. |
| Muslims | a follower of the religion of Islam( one who has submitted to god) |
| Shari'a | Islamic system of law. |
| Imam | A teacher who leads services at a mosque. |
| Abu Bakr | First caliph of Islam after the death of Muhammad that helped the religion survive. |
| Pilgrimage | A journey to a place considered sacred for religious purposes. |

| Shahada | Declaration of faith |
| Salat | 5 daily prayers |
| Zakat(Alms) | Tax for charity; obligatory for all Muslims |
| Sawm | Fasting during the month of Ramadan |
| Hajj | A pilgrimage to Mecca, performed as a duty by Muslims |
| religious tolerance | Willingness to let others practice their own beliefs |
| Sunna | An Islamic model for living, based on the life and teachings of Muhammad |
