Twelve Tables Set of laws drawn up by Roman's in 450 BCE that encompassed the most important Roman rules.
Imperium A time of absolute power. Supreme authority.
First Triumvirate Group of three rulers.The first triumvirate was a coalition of Caesar, Pompey and and Crassus in 60 BC.
The political alliance--2nd triumvirate was Antony, Lepidus and Octavian.
Patron In ancient Rome, it was a former owner and protector of a freed slave. A person who gives financial support or other support to a person.
Forum A place , meeting or medium where ideas are expressed. In ancient Rome, it was a square or marketplace used for judicial and other business.
Pliny the Elder Roman statesman and scholar. His Natural History encyclopedia recorded events in the human and natural world.
Pax Romana Roman Peace. The peace that existed bewteen the nationalities within the Roman empire.
Cicero Roman statesman, orator (speaker) and statesman. He established the ideal for Roman writing and oral presentations.
Mercenary A mercenary is someone who makes money at the expense of ethics. A hired soldier who fights for money.... not the nation or the state.
Octavian Roman statesman who established the Roman empire. He became emperor in 27 BC and defeated Marc Antony and Cleopatra in 31 BC
Virgil Roman poet.
Senate The supreme council of the state.
Etruscans Are people from the northern portion of the italian peninsula, who were advanced people. They settled city of Rome.
Censor One of two magistrates who held census and supervised public morals.
Latin The language of Ancient Rome and its empire.
Plebian A commoner, member of the lower social class.
Gladiator A man trained to fight another man or animal with a weapon in an arena.
Patrician An aristocrat or nobleman. A member of a long established wealthy family.
Vernacular The ordinary language or dialect spoken by ordinary people. The native language or mother tongue.
Tribune An official in Ancient Rome chosen by Plebians to protect their rights. and interests.
Pantheon All gods of a people or religion. A TEMPLE dedicated to the gods.
Princeps Title granted to Octavian, meaning "First Citizen."
Despot/Despotism A ruler who holds absolute power. Usually a cruel or oppressive ruler.
Phalanx A group of people or things of a similar type forming a compact body !
Veto "I forbid" A constitutional rejection of legislation or of a governmental proposal.
Aqueduct An artificial channel for moving water.
Autocracy A system of government by one person with total and absolute power.
Consul An official chosen from the Patrician class who carried out the laws of Rome. They ruled for one year. They were also in charge of the army and could veto laws made by the other consul.
Republic A government where citizens vote their leaders into power . The leaders rule in the name of the people.
Caesar A popular Roman ruler of the Roman people who tried to give plebians reforms but was stabbed by Brutus. Established first triumvirate.
Maniple A term meaning a handful of men in this group there were 60-120 men that were flexible when fighting in battle. They were part of the Roman army.
Romulus and Remus The twin brothers who founded Rome. They were the "sons of Mars" rescued and raised by a wolf.
