Early Humans

Neolithic Revolution The move from hunting and gathering to farming
Stone Age The period of time during which humans first began to make tools of stone

civilization A culture marked by developments in arts, sciences, government and social structure.
agriculture The practice of raising crops and animals
Domestication The training of wild animals to be useful to humans
Nomad Someone who moves in search of food
Bronze Age The period of time during which people began making tools and weapons out of copper and tin.
Pre-history The period of time before people invented writing
Specialization of labor People performing special jobs according to skills
society Any group who live together and share a common goal
culture A characteristic of civilization that includes beliefs and behaviors of society of group of people. A culture is a TOTAL WAY OF LIFE!
historian An expert who studies and records the past
anthropologist A scientist who studies human development and culture.
archaeologist An expert who studies the past by examining objects that people have left behind.
Fossil The hardened remains of plants or animals.
Homo Habilis This hominid used very simple tools, which helped them live better and longer lives. The used rocks as chopping tools.
Homo Erectus This hominid's greatest ability was to use fire. This hominid moved from place to place, creating shelters with better tools and using fire to keep warm.
Homo neanderthalensis (Neanderthals) These hominids were skilled toolmakers and made more than 60 types of tools. They had a clear sense of community. When members of the group died, they buried their dead. They laid them in burial mounds.
Homo sapiens These hominids made tools for engraving and sculpting. They made needles for sewing and they built shelters of earth and stone. Their bodies were not as well adapted to the cold because of the clothes and fire.
