Monotheism Worship of one G-d
Scribe In Mesopotamia, individuals that would go to school to learn to write cuneiform
City-state An early city that was like a small independent country with its own laws and government.
Fertile Crescent The area located between the Tigris and Euphrates. Largely present day Iraq, Syria, Lebannon, Israel and Jordan. In Ancient times, that land was good for planting.
Empire A very large political unit consisting of many territories, or city-states united under one powerful ruler.
Chariots Two wheeled vehicle pulled by a horse.
Arch An upside down U or V shaped structure that supports weight above it. As in a doorway.
Cuneiform An early form of writing that were wedge shaped.
Irrigation The practice of watering the fields by saving and redirecting water from a source such as a river.
Pictograph They are symbols that stand for real objects such as a snake or water.
Capital A city that is the center of the government.
Tribute Wealth that is sent from one country or ruler to another as a sign that one is superior.
Ziggurat A pyramid shaped tower, topped by a temple, believed to house the god of the Mesopotamian city.
Sargon 1 A strong and skilled general who led the takeover of Sumer, and created the first Mesopotamian Empire.
Levees A wall of earth that is built to prevent a river from flooding.
Sumerians An Ancient people who moved down from the foothills of the Zagros mountains to the plains oat the mouth of Persian Gulf in between the Tigris and Euphrates.
Gilgamesh An epic poem told by a hero king who described his adventures in search of eternal life. He encountered a flood and made a best friend.
Polytheism Belief in many gods.
Akkadians The first group of people that attacked the Sumerains and created the world's first empire.
Social Structure The way a civilization is organized.
