Agricultural Density The number of farmers per unit of arable land
Arithmetic Density The population per unit of area
What is misleading about Arithmetic Density? Averages- because there may be extremes that move the amount further away from the actual amount
Cartography The science of map-making
Concentration The extent of a feature's spread over space. The concentration of an area can be scattered (dispersed) or clustered.
Contagious Diffusion The rapid and widespread diffusion of a characteristic throughout the population.
Cultural Ecology The geographic study of human-environment relationships.
Culture The body of customary beliefs, material traits, and social forms that together constitute the distinct tradition of a group of people. Latin cultus- "to care for" which usually means... 1)To care about 2)To take care of
Density The frequency in which something occurs in space.
Diffusion The process by which a characteristic spreads across space from one place to another over time.
Distance-Decay The farther away one group is from another, the less likely the two groups are to interact. Contact diminishes with increasing distance and eventually disappears.
Environmental determinism Human actions were scientifically caused by environmental conditions.
Expansion Diffusion The spread of a feature from one place to another in a snowballing process (Exponentially, widespread, rapid, etc.).
Formal Region An area in which everyone shares in common one or more distinctive characteristics.
Functional Region (nodal region) An area organized around a node or focal point.
GIS Geographical Information System. A high performance computer system that processes geographic data.
