a/phag/ia a- prefix "without, not"; -phag- root "eat, swallow"; -ia suffix "condition" - not able to eat/swallow. Aphagia required nutritional support through alternative methods.
skelet/al skelet- root "skeleton"; -al suffix "pertaining to" - pertaining to the skeleton. Exercise strengthens skeletal structure.
hypo/glyc/emia hypo- prefix "under, below"; -glyc- root "sugar"; -emia suffix "blood condition" -- low sugar in the bloodd. He felt shaky during a hypoglycemia episode.
endo/cardi/um endo- prefix "inside, within"; -cardi- root "heart"; -um suffix " structure, tissue" -- inner lining of the heart. The endocardium helps regulate blood flow within the heart.
nephr/oma nephr- root "kidneys"; -oma suffix "tumor, mass" -- kidney tumor. Doctors evaluated whether the nephroma was benign.
hydro/phobia hydro- root "water"; -phobia suffix "excessive fear" -- excessive fear of water. Hydrophobia is a classic sign of rabies.
a/febrile a- prefix "not, without"; -febrile root "fever" -- without fever. Being afebrile indicated recovery was progressing.
eti/ology eti- root "cause"; -ology suffix "study of" -- study of cause of diseases. Understanding etiology helps guide treatment decisions.
syn/esthesia syn- prefix "together"; -esthes- root "sensation, feeling"; -ia suffix "condition" -- condition of feeling 2 sensations together. Synesthesia caused her to associate colors with sounds.
idio/path/ic idio- prefix "unknown"; -path- root "disease"; -ic suffix "pertaining to" -- pertaining to a disease with unknown cause. Idiopathic disorders can be challenging to treat.
gen/etic gen- root "genes, origin"; -etic suffix "pertaining to" -- pertaining to genes or origin. Genetic testing helped identify the risk.
crani/al crani- root "head, skull"; -al suffix "pertaining to" -- pertaining to the head and skull. The cranial nerves control many facial movements.
ipsi/later/al ipsi- prefix "same"; -later- rot "side"; -al suffix "pertaining to" -- pertaining to the same side. The reflex affected ipsilateral muscles.
palm/ar palm- root "palm of hand"; -ar suffix "pertaining to" -- pertaining to the palms of the hands; Palmar view shows the palm facing forward.
bi/lateral bi- prefix "two"; later- root "side"; -al suffix "pertaining to" -- pertaining to two sides. Bilateral hearing tests were performed.
