Enlightenment Period when the Scientific Method and reason were applied to explain human nature.
Rationalism Belief that truth can be arrived at solely by reason, or logical thinking.
Philosophes French word meaning "philosopher"
Salons Gathering of the social, political, and cultural elite in France.
Popular Sovereignty Government principle created by and subject to the will of the people.
Enlightened Despotism System of Government in which absolute monarchs ruled according to the principles of the Enlightenment.
Patriots American colonist who actively favored independence.
Loyalists Colonist who strongly opposed independence.
Federal System Of Government Constitution that divided Governmental powers between the Central Government and the individual States.
Executive Branch A branch of Government that enforces the Laws.
Legislative Branch A branch of Government that makes the Laws.
Judicial Branch A branch of Government that interprets and applies the Laws.
Bill Of Rights The First 10 Amendments to the U.S. Constitution.
Bourgeoisie The city-dwelling Middle Class.
Tithe 1/10 of a person's income.
Emigres Nobles who fled France during the Revolution.
Departments Administrative districts of France.
Conservatives People who do not want to change existing conditions.
Radicals People without institute far-reaching changes.
Moderates People who have no extreme views.
Universal Manhood Suffrage Every adult male could vote, whether he owned property or not.
Conscription The draft
Coup D'etat Seize power by force
Plebiscite People could vote only yes or no and could not make any changes.
Concordat Agreement between Napoleon and Pope where Napoleon recognized Catholicism as the religion of most French citizens.
Nationalism Love of one's Country
Scorched - Earth Policy The tactic of burning or destroying crops and everything else that might be of value to the invaders.
Legitimacy Restoring former ruling families to their Thrones.
Indemnity Money paid for war damages
Reaction Period of time during which in authority desires a return to the orderly conditions of an earlier period.
Reactionaries Extremists who opposed changed and wanted to go back to the way things were before.
Liberalism Ideals of individual rights and the rule of Law rather than a rule of a Monarch.
Counterrevolution Activities aimed against or to Counter a Revolution.
