15 Medical Terms

HPV Human Papillomavirus; a common sexually transmitted virus that can cause genital warts and cancer.
STD Sexually Transmitted Disease; infections spread through sexual contact.
STI Sexually Transmitted Infection; infections passed through sexual activity.
IVF In Vitro Fertilization; a procedure where an egg is fertilized outside the body.
HRT Hormone Replacement Therapy; treatment using hormones to relieve symptoms of hormonal imbalance.
LMP Last Menstrual Period; the first day of a woman’s last menstrual cycle.
OB/GYN Obstetrics and Gynecology; medical specialty for pregnancy and female reproductive health.
C-section Cesarean section; surgical delivery of a baby through the abdomen and uterus.
PID Pelvic Inflammatory Disease; infection of female reproductive organs.
BC Birth Control; methods used to prevent pregnancy.
Graafian follicle A mature ovarian follicle ready to release an egg (named after Regnier de Graaf).
Fallopian tubes Tubes that carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus (named after Gabriele Falloppio).
Bartholin glands Glands that secrete mucus to lubricate the vagina (named after Caspar Bartholin).
Skene glands Glands near the female urethra involved in lubrication (named after Alexander Skene).
Leydig cells Cells in the testes that produce testosterone (named after Franz Leydig).
