Parts used to build medical language
| Term | Definition |

| Sagittal | Divides the body along a hypothetical plane from right to left. |
| Coronal | Divides the body along a hypothetical plane from front to back. |
| Transverse | Divides the body along a hypothetical plane from top to bottom. |
| Supine - Prone | Supine - Laying down on back. Prone - Laying down on belly. |
| Dorsum - Palmar or Plantar | Dorsum - the top of the hand or foot. Palmar - the palm of the hand. Plantar - the sole of the foot. |
| Proximal - Distal | Proximal - closer to the center Distal - farther away from the center |
| Lateral - Medial | Lateral - out to the side Medial - toward the middle |
| Ventral/Antral/Anterior - Dorsal/Posterior | Ventral/Antral/Anterior - the front Dorsal/Posterior - the back |
| Superior - Inferior | Superior - above (the head) Inferior - below (the feet) |
