The Formation of Bones, Types of Bone Marrow, Joints

| Osteoclasts | break down old or damaged bone |
| Osteoblasts | help rebuild the bone |
| Produced in red bone marrow: (4 terms) | 1. erythrocytes 2. hemoglobin 3. leukocytes 4.thrombocytes |
| Function of yellow bone marrow | stores fat |
| Fibrous Joints | consisting of inflexible layer of dense connective tissue, holds the bones tightly together |
| Cartilaginous Joints | allows only slight movement and consists of bones connected entirely by cartilage |
| Synovial Joints | two bones articulate to permit a variety of motions |
| Ball-and-socket joints (synovial jt.) | ex. hips and shoulder allow a wide ROM |
| Hinge joints (synovial jt.) | ex. knees and elbows allow movement in one direction |
| Synovial capsule | outermost layers of strong fibrous tissue; resembles a sleeve around jt. |
| Ligaments | bands of fibrous tissue that form jt. by connecting two bones |
| Bursa | fibrous sac that acts as a cushion to ease friction |
