why shouldn't adhesive bandages be used on elderly patients? They may have fragile skin.
How long should the patient watch the venipuncture site before removing the bandage? 15-30 minutes
leaving a Coban or other pressure dressing, in place for too long can cause what? constriction of the tissues and possible circulation issues.
what should the patient be instructed to avoid after a venipuncture? lifting and frequent bending of the elbow, to prevent the return of bleeding
prewarming the puncture site helps with what? locate veins in older ppl, patients with cancer or obesity
when transporting specimens from facility to facility, where do you add the absorbent pad? in the specimens containment portion of the transport bag to provide extra safety from spills and breakage
how do you prevent hemolysis during transport? place the specimens in the bag, handle it gently and keep it vertical with the tube cap or closure on top

How does sodium citrate in the Light blue top tube work? works by binding calcium to stop the blood from clotting
What the tube must be full? The light blue tube. So the sodium citrate and blood ratio is correct. 9 to 1

what are common tests run on the light blue tube? PT, PTT, D-dimers, fibrinogen ...

When using the butterfly needle, and drawing from a light blue tube, what must you do? use a discard tube first
Substances that inhibit or promote clotting are called? additives
Light green tubed test are what type of CHEMISTRY test? STAT
What is the white top tube used for? molecular diagnostics involving DNA. Think of them as specialized containers with EDTA, and a plasma separator gel
what color tops are FDP/FSP tubes? light blue. dark blue or black top with a label that identifies it
what 2 additives are in the FDP tubes? Thrombin to quickly clot the specimen, and a Fibrinolytic Inhibitor, so that the clot does not break down
Why must care be taken when selecting the Yellow sterile top tubes? because there are 2 different additives but the tubes will be clearly labeled
What does the additive SPS in the yellow sterile tube do? SPS is used for blood culture collections. The SPS acts as an anticoagulant and neutralizes the effect of bacterial growth inhibitors, such as antibiotics.
What does the additive ACD in the yellow sterile tube do? ACD is an additive that maintains red cell viability or growth and is used for cellular studies in blood banks or human leukocyte antigen (HLA) typing.
