Which child inherits most of their father’s property and the covenant promise? Firstborn son
What is a shrine? A sacred place. The faithful make pilgrimages or journeys to these holy places
What is a birthright? A right to which a person is entitled because of his birth or origin.
How did Gold show his merciful love to Jacob? God did not abandon Jacob because he sinned. God gave Jacob the opportunity to renew his love for him.
What promises were included in the covenant that God made with Abraham? God promised to give Abraham many descendants and to give his descendants the Land of Canaan.
Who inherited the covenant first made with Abraham? Isaac and Jacob
What was the name of Abraham’s son? Isaac
What were the names of Isaac’s sons? Jacob and Esau
Why did Abraham send a servant to Haran to find a wife for Isaac? Because Abraham decided it was time to Isaac to marry.
Who was Isaac’s wife and how did God tell the servant who it should be? Rebekah was Isaac’s wife. God told the servant Isaac should chose the woman who was filled his water for the camels.
How did Rebekah show she was willing to marry Isaac? By going home with the servant.
Why did Rebekah need to comfort Isaac? Because his mother had just died.
What does Saint Paul say that married love should remind us of? The love Christ has for his Church.
What did God tell Rebekah about her twin sons before they were born? The first born son would serve the other. This comforted Rebekah because she was afraid the babies would die.
What was the importance of being the firstborn son? He gets the father’s property and God’s covenant with Abraham.
What did Esau give Jacob for a bowl of red pottage? His birthright.
How did Jacob receive his father’s blessing? Rebekah and Jacob tricked Abraham.
What consequences were suffered by Isaac’s family because of their sins? Esau lost his birthright, Jacob had to leave home because his brother hated him and wanted to kill him and Rebekah never saw her favorite son, Jacob, again.
What is a tithe? A tithe is 10% of your income that should go to the Church
How did Jacob feel when he arrived at Bethel? Lonely and tired and afraid and worried that his brother had followed him to kill him.
What was Jacob’s dream? He dreamt there was a stairway to heaven and God renewed the covenant he made to Abraham with Jacob.
What did God promise Jacob in his dream? He renewed the covenant that he would have many descendants and that he would always be with him and protect him.
After Jacob awoke from his dream, what promise did he make to God? He promised to worship only the God of Abraham and Isaac and to give one tenth of everything he ever owned to the Lord.
How did God show his merciful love to Jacob? By drawing good out of Jacob’s sin, God gave Jacob the opportunity to choose to love God again.
What is a dowry? gifts of money or property given to a bride by her parents that she brings to her husband in marriage.
What is a bridal price? Gifts of money or property given to the parents of a bride by a groom.
What is polygamy? the practice of having more than one wife at the same time.
What is reconciliation? the act of rebuilding a friendship between two people
What is a sacrament? a physical sign given by Jesus through which Jesus meets us and gives us his grace.
What is penance? A loving act that the priest asks you to do after your sins have been forgiven
What is absolution? the words spoken by the priest that take away our sins.
What is examination of conscience? Using the Ten Commandments, we ask ourselves if we have been acting as persons created in the image of God and how we can better act as persons created in his image in the future.
What is Sacrament of Reconciliation? The sacrament received after Baptism that forgives our sins and restores out relationship with God and the Church through the absolution of the priest
What is the Seal of Confession? The priest is obligated to keep secret what someone tells him in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
What is a sin? An offense against God. Knowing that something is wrong and choosing to do it anyway.
What is mortal sin? a very serious sin that results in the loss of sanctifying grace in the soul of the sinner. Such a sin turns the heart of the sinner away from God through the loss of God’s life and love in the soul.
What is a venial sin? A sin that damages our relationship with God. It is a less serious sin than a mortal sin.
What is the Act of Contrition? a prayer that tells God we are sorry for our sins.
What are the three things needed for a sin to be mortal? 1. It must be serious. 2. We must have full knowledge that it is a serious offense. 3. We must freely chose to do it.
What are the 5 steps to receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation? 1. Examine your conscience. 2. Be sorry for your sins. 3. Resolve not to sin again. 4. Confess your sins to a priest. 5. Do your penance.
What did Jacob’s name change to? Isreal
What is the name of Jacob’s uncle? Laban
Who did Jacob meet at the well as he was traveling to Harlan? The shepherds and then Rachel
Who did Jacob wish to marry? Rachel
Why couldn’t Jacob marry Rachel? Because he had no money or property for the bridal price.
How did Laban trick Jacob? He had Jacob work for him for 7 years in order to marry Rebekah and when the marriage happened, Jacob actually married Leah, Rachel’s older sister.
Why didn’t Jacob know it was Leah and not Rachel? Leah had a veil on.
Why didn’t Laban trick Jacob? Because the first born daughter should marry first.
What did Jacob do to marry Rachel? Worked another 7 years for his uncle.
How many wives did Jacob end up having? Four - Leah, Rachel, Zilpah and Bilbao (Rachel and Leah’s maid servants)
What religion still allows polygamy? Muslim
Does Christianity permit polygamy? No
How many years did Jacob work for Laban? 20 years
Why didn’t Jacob tell Laban he was leaving? Jacon didn’t think Laban would let him leave With his property.
Why didn’t Laban harm Jacob when he found him? God told him not to.
How did Laban and Jacob reconcile with each other? Laban let Jacob leave.
What 2 things did Jacob do when he worried that Esau may still be angry with him? He prayed and sent gifts.
Who did Jacob wrestle after he crossed the River Jabbok? The angel.
Why was Jacob given the new name of Israel? Because he has striven with God and men.
How did Esau greet Jacob? He kissed and hugged him.
What did Jacob do after he arrived in the land of Canaan? He set up a memorial stone for God.
What did Jacob call God after arriving in the Land of Canaan and why? God of Isreal Because he showed God that he had accepted him as his own
What did God ask Israel to do when he renewed his covenant with him? He asked him to go to Bethel and make an alter, to love God and to be fruitful and multiply.
How did Rachel die? When she gave birth to Benjamin
When did Esau and Jacob meet again? When they buried their father.
Who acts for Jesus in the Sacrament of Reconciliation? the priest
