| Kautilya | An older Brahmin that searched for a leader to drive Greek invaders out of Northwestern India. Discovered Chandragupta Maurya and helped him raise an army and strategy to gain power. |
| Chandragupta Maurya | The leader of the rebels that overthrew the Greeks and then the Magadha kingdom. |
| Bureaucracy | A system of offices that carries out government rules and regulations. |
| Magadha | The strongest Indian kingdom in the Vedic age. Conquered by Chandragupta Maurya. |
| Envoys | A messenger or representative that is sent on missions concerning relations between governments. |
| Province | A region with its own government. |
| Arthashastra | A book written by Kautilya that gives advice on how to be a good ruler. Followed by Chandragupta Maurya to govern his Maurya empire. |
| Bindusara | Chandragupta Maurya's son who became emperor and expanded the empire father across India. Father of Asoka - did not like Asoka and sent him far away. |
| Kalinga | A kingdom that resisted conquest by the Maurya empire until Asoka captured it. Thousands of soldiers died and many more were captured and sent to other parts of the empire. Made Asoka regret war. |
| Tolerance | A willingness to respect different beliefs and customs. |
| Stupas | Buddhist commemorative burial mounds. |
| Chandra Gupta I | The first ruler of the Gupta dynasty, named after Chandragupta Maurya. Expanded the empire across the Ganges Bason. |
| Numerals | A symbol used to represent a number. |
| Samudra Gupta (Chandra Gupta II) | Chandra Gupta I's son, who became the emperor of Gupta, and conquered the rest of northern India and lands to the south and west. |
| Metallurgy | The science that deals with extracting metal from ore and using it to create useful objects. Iron Pillar of Delhi is an example. |
| Kalidasa | The greatest writer of the Gupta empire. He wrote plays and poetry in the language of Sanskrit. |

| Aryabhata | An important Indian astronomer and mathematician who wrote a book on arithmetic, algebra and trigonometry. First to state that the Earth rotates on its axis. |
| Guilds | A group of workers practicing the same craft who have joined together to protect their economic interests. |
| Asoka | Bindusara's son and Chandragupta Maurya's grandson who became emperor after killing his brothers and first waged war then turned to peace through Buddhism. |
