What is the difference between capillary tube collection and Microcollection ? Capillary tube collection is the method , while Microcollection (Microtainer) refers to the specific small tubes used to collect that capillary blood, often with color-coded tops and additives for different tests.
What is in a Capillary puncture specimen? A mixture of venous blood, arterial blood and interstitial fluid
What is interstitial fluid? fluid between cells and tissues
Capillary blood is higher in what? Glucose
Capillary blood is lower in what? Electrolytes, total protein, and bilirubin
What does Capillary blood do to reference ranges? It makes them different

Why must we allow the alcohol to dry before a stick? to prevent hemolysis of the blood sample
How is dermal puncture device size chosen? By the patient's size and age
Why is venipuncture more difficult in infants and children? Because of their smaller size, it is difficult to find a vein large enough to withstand vacuum in evacuated collection tubes without collapsing.
Why is prewarming beneficial ? The warming will increase the blood flow to the capillaries sevenfold. Resulting in specimens obtained more quickly with less compression needed. Results are more accurate.
On what part of the feet do we do dermal punctures? The medial and the lateral plantar surface of the heel.
What dermal puncture requires a Physician's permission ? A limb on a side of a mastectomy
