| Code of Hammurabi | Collection of 282 laws that governed Babylon. Also known as "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth". |
| Epic of Gligamesh | Long poem about a hero king. |
| Irrigation | Method of moving water to land to water crops. |
| Polytheism | The belief in many gods. |
| Fertile Crescent | The large region of farmland around the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. |
| Scribe | A writer. |
| Surplus | More than is needed. |
| Cuneiform | The first system of writing. It was wedge shapes pressed into damp clay with a reed. |
| Social Hierarchy | Division of society by rank or class. |
