Mesopotamia Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Silt A mixture of small rocks and soil. It creates very fertile soil.
Ziggurat Pyramid-shaped temple. Only special priests were allowed at the top.
City-State A political unit with a city and its surrounding area.
Code of Hammurabi Collection of 282 laws that governed Babylon. Also known as "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth".
Epic of Gligamesh Long poem about a hero king.
Irrigation Method of moving water to land to water crops.
Polytheism The belief in many gods.
Fertile Crescent The large region of farmland around the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.
Scribe A writer.
Surplus More than is needed.
Cuneiform The first system of writing. It was wedge shapes pressed into damp clay with a reed.
Social Hierarchy Division of society by rank or class.
