Byzantine Empire

| Constantinople | The capital city of the Byzantine Empire; it was a rich and powerful city. Today, it's called Istanbul. |
| Absolute Ruler | A leader who has complete control and makes all the decisions without asking others. |
| Empress Theodora | The wife of Emperor Justinian. She was very smart and helped him rule the empire. She also worked to make life better for women. |
| Justinian | A famous emperor of the Byzantine Empire. He tried to make the empire strong again and created a set of laws. |
| Justinian Code | A group of organized laws made by Emperor Justinian to help rule the empire fairly. |
| Hagia Sophia | A giant and beautiful church built in Constantinople. It showed how powerful and rich the empire was. |
| Eastern Orthodox Church | The Christian church in the Byzantine Empire. It had different beliefs and leaders than the church in the west. |
| Roman Catholic Church | The Christian church in Western Europe, led by the Pope. It split from the Eastern Orthodox Church. |
