Pre history The time before written records were kept.
Archaeology The study of past people and cultures through their material remains
Anthropology The study of humans, their societies, and how they developed over time.
Geography The study of environments and certain land masses. Land, climate, water, and resources.
Primary Source / Secondary Source Primary, directly from the time period. Secondary, created after the time period based on primary sources.
Historian A person who studies and writes about the past. Uses written records.
Artifact An object made or used by humans in the past.
Culture The way of life of a certain group of people. Beliefs, customs, language and traditions.
Cultural Diffusion The mix of culture through migration and trade.
Mary & Louis Leakey / Donald Johansen / Olduvai Gorge Found early human fossils in East Africa./ Found Lucy in Ethiopia./ Fossil site where people found early humans in Africa.
Out of Africa Theory The idea that modern humans first appeared in Africa and then migrated to other parts of the word.
Hunters and gatherers - nomadic herders - farmers - traders People who gather and hunt their food.
Hominid - Homo Habilis / Homo Erectus / Neanderthal / Cro Magnum / Homo Sapien Early humans who walked up right. Handy man. Upright man. Had rituals and buried the dead. early modern humans who made art. Wise man.
Paleolithic Period (Characteristics) Homes and gatherers lived the nomadic lifestyles.
Neolithic Period / Agricultural Revolution (Characteristics) High populations, farmers and settled in permanent villages
Nomad Someone who moved from place to place to find food and shelter.
Animism Belief that spirits are in animals and natural objects around them.
Domestication The taming and breeding of animals and plants for human use.
Barter To exchange two things without money like trading.
Civilization A complex society with cities, organized government, religion, social classes, and writing.
Eight Features / Characteristics of a Civilization Cities, well organized central government, complex religion, job specialization, social classes, arts and architecture,public works and a form of writing.
Job Specialization / New Occupations People became artisans, merchants, builders, priests, and scribes.
