leptotene prophase I- chromatin condenses form chromosome (not sister chromatids), along length chromosomes visible
zygotene prophase I- homologous chromosomes (maternal-paternal) pair together forming bivalents + split into sister chromatids + develop local alignment sites (synapsis) between chromatids of H-pairs (form tetrad)
pachytene prophase I- synapsis complete (crossing over) form chiasma- gene exchange between H-pairs (more likely along long distance)
