Animism & Other Religions

QuestionAnswer
Animism Defention The belief that all of nature is alive and filled with unseen spirits that can be worshipped or appeased. Animists often believe that a soul or spirit exists in things like trees, stones, and rivers.
Goal of Animism The goal of animism is typically to gain power through the manipulation of spiritual forces or beings for personal or communal benefit. This is in contrast to religion, which often involves surrendering to a higher power
In an animistic worldview, when a disaster occurs, the question is what would they say? isn't "what caused it?" but "who caused it?"
Jainism A religion with a strong emphasis on ahimsa and asceticism. The founder, Mahavira, lived same time as Buddha opposed caste system. Jainism, like Hinduism, Buddhism, affirms samsara, ahimsa, and possibility of moksha through ascetic practices.
Sikhism A relatively new religion, originating in the 15th century. It combines some Hindu and Muslim practices and emphasizes a single God. Sikhs give great importance to their Gurus
Taoism A Chinese religion that focuses on living in harmony with the Tao, or "The Way". It began more as a philosophy and emphasizes living simply and maintaining the balance of nature through the concepts of yin and yang.
New Age Movement: Core beliefs The central problem is not sin, but a lack of perception or ignorance about one's true nature. The goal is to achieve a new consciousness or enlightenment to realize a sense of oneness with the "Universal Self" or Brahman
NAM Reincarnation Unlike Hinduism, where reincarnation (samsara) is a problem to escape, the NAM views it as a positive opportunity to have more chances to reach enlightenment
