| Polis | The Greek word for “city-state,” meaning a city and the villages and farmland around it that ruled itself. |
| Citizens | People who had the right to take part in government in a city-state, such as voting or making laws. |
| Oligarchy | A type of government where a small group of rich or powerful people make all the decisions |
| Aristocrats | members of the wealthy and privileged class in ancient societies, often holding political power. |
| Democracy | a system of government where citizens have the power to make decisions, typically through voting. |
| Pericles | A famous leader of Athens who helped make it strong in government, art, and learning during its “Golden Age.” |
| Tyrant | a ruler who wields absolute power, often in a cruel or oppressive manner; in ancient Greece, it could also refer to a leader who gained power unconstitutionally. |
| Acropolis | busy area in a Greek city, often containing important buildings and temples. |
