directional terms

anterior frontal surface of a body or structure
posterior back or rear side of a body or structure
superior part of the body that is higher in position or closer to the head.
inferior part of a body that is below another structure of closer to the feet
medial middle or inner part of a body or structure
lateral side of a body or body part
proximal closer to the center of a body or the point of the attachment
distal a location farther away from the origin or center of a body part or structure
coronal/frontal plane vertical plane that divides the body into front (anterior) and the back (posterior) sections
sagittal plane vertical plane that divides the body into the right to left sections
axial/transverse plane a horizontal plane that divides the body into the upper (superior) or and lower (inferior) sections
dorsal cavity a major body cavity located on the posterior (back) side of the body
ventral cavity a large body cavity located on the anterior (front) part of the human body
cranial cavity a hollow space within the skull that houses and protects the brain
vertebral cavity the anatomical space formed by the vertebral column that protects the spinal cord and spinal nerve roots, allowing for proper innervation throughout the body
thoracic cavity a bony and muscular structure located in the upper torso that protects and house vital organs, including the heart, lungs, and esophagus.
pelvic cavity a bony structure located in the lower part of the abdomen. between the pelvic inlet (superior border) and pelvic outlet (inferior border)
abdominal cavity the large body space between the diaphragm and pelvis, containing organs such as the stomach, liver, intestines, and kidneys
