| prefix | A word part added before a root to modify its meaning |
| root | The fundamental unit of a word. |
| suffix | A word part added to the end of a root to modify its meaning |
| acronym | An abbreviation formed from the first letter of each word in a phrase |
| appendix | An appendage; usually means the narrow tube of lymphatic tissue attached to the cecum, the vermiform (worm-like) appendix |
| blood | The fluid that circulates in the cardiovascular system Roots: hem/o, hemat/o |
| blood pressure | The force exerted by blood against the wall of a vessel |
| cell | the basic structural and functional unit of the living organism; a microscopic unit that combines with other cells to form tissues root: cyt/o |
| combining forms | A word root combined with a vowel that links the root with another word part, such as a suffix or another root; combining forms are shon with a slash between the root and the vowel, as in neur/o |

| hair | A thread-like keratinized outgrowth from the skin Root: trich/o |
| heart | the muscular organ with four chambers that contracts rhythmically to propel blood through vessels to all parts of the body root: cardi/o |

| lymphatic system | The system that drains fluid and proteins from the tissues and returns them to the bloodstream; this system also participates in immunity and aids in absorption of fats from the digestive tract |
