| Ferdinand Magellan (1519–1522) | Led first circumnavigation of the globe; died during the voyage. |
| Hernando Cortés (1519) | Conquered the Aztecs with superior weapons and alliances. |
| Francisco Pizarro (1533) | Defeated the Inca Empire; executed Atahualpa after ransom. |
| Hernando de Soto | Explored the southeastern United States; helped conquer the Inca. |
| Vasco Núñez de Balboa (1513) | First European to reach the Pacific Ocean via Panama. |
| Henry Hudson | Sought a northwest passage; mutinied and lost at sea. |
