Religious motives Catholic Spanish and Portuguese aimed to spread Christianity; Protestant groups sought religious freedom.

Francisco Pizarro (1533) Defeated the Inca Empire; executed Atahualpa after ransom.
Hernando de Soto Explored the southeastern United States; helped conquer the Inca.
Vasco Núñez de Balboa (1513) First European to reach the Pacific Ocean via Panama.
Henry Hudson Sought a northwest passage; mutinied and lost at sea.
Jacques Cartier and Samuel de Champlain Explored and established French colonies in Canada.
