The integumentary system consists of skin and its appendages—hair, nails, and sweat and oil glands The integumentary system is the largest system of the body
gland a group of cells that produces and secretes a substance. The glands in skin produce and secrete sweat and oil.)
Skin The body’s natural covering, and it consists of all four types of tissue working together. There are two skin layers—the epidermis and the dermis
The dermis the inner layer of skin and is made up of connective tissue. Blood vessels, nerves, sweat and oil glands, and hair roots are found in the dermis
The epidermis the outer layer and contains living and dead cells arranged in specific layers. As the cells divide, creating newer cells, the older cells are pushed toward the surface, where they eventually die. Dead cells constantly flake off and are replaced by living cells
pigment The living cells of the epidermis contain pigment, which gives skin its color
organ of elimination Through perspiration, the skin eliminates cellular metabolism waste materials such as urea and other unwanted chemicals that may have accumulated in the perspiration.
Hair The entire body, except the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet, is covered with hair Hair in the nose, eyes, and ears protects these organs from dust, insects, and other foreign objects
Nails protect the tips of fingers and toes and help fingers pick up and handle small objects
Sweat glands help the body regulate temperature. Sweat consists of water, salt, and a small amount of waste
dilate widen
constrict narrow
oxygenation the amount of oxygen in tissues
Oil glands lie near hair shafts, and they secrete an oily substance into the space near the hair shaft
