Anatomical Terms

Anatomical Terms Related to Position

TermDefinition
Superior situated above another structure; the upper part of the body
Inferior situated below another structure; the lower part of the body
Anterior the front surface of the body; often used to indicate the position of one structure in relation to another
Posterior the back surface of the body; often used to indicate the position of one structure in relation to another
Midline an imaginary line that divides the body into left and right sides
Medial closest to the midline of the body
Lateral farthest from the midline of the body
Proximal nearest the trunk of the body or the point of origin
Distal farthest from the trunk of the body or the point of origin
Superficial near the surface of the body
Deep away from the surface or farther into the body (e.g., bones are deep to the skin)
Peripheral away from the centre of the body
