Medical Terminology

word element  A part of a word. Like all words, medical terms are made up of parts
Prefixes A prefix is a word element placed at the beginning of a word that changes the meaning of the word.
anti- against
combining vowel   A vowel added between two roots or between a root and a suffix to make pronunciation easier.
bi- double, two, twice
Root Words The root word contains the basic meaning of the word
Suffixes A suffix is placed at the end of a root word to change the meaning of the word, but it is not used alone.
ab- away from
ad- to, toward, near
brady- slow
dis- apart, free from
dys- difficult, abnormal
endo- inner, inside
hemi- half
hyper- excessive, too much, high
hypo- under, decreased, less than normal
inter- between
leuk- white
macro- large
mal- illness, disease
micro- small
mono- one, single
muco- mucous
neo new
peri- around
poly- many, much
post- after, behind
pre- before, in front of, prior to
sero- thin, watery fluid
sub- under, beneath
super-supra- above, over, excess
tachy- fast, rapid
