Cardio vascular System
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| sinus rhythm | heart's normal rhythm |
| risk factor | Any of various factors considered to increase the probability that a disease will occur; for example, high blood pressure and smoking are considered risk factors for heart disease. |
| arrythmias | Irregularity in the rhythm of the heartbeat. |
| bradycardia | Heart rate of fewer than 60 beats per minute. |
| tachycardia | Heart rate greater than 100 beats per minute |
| atrial fibrillation | An irregular, usually rapid, heartbeat caused by overstimulation of the AV node. |
| fibrillation | Random, chaotic, irregular heart rhythm. |
| dysrhythmia | Abnormal heart rhythm. |
| flutter bruit | Sound or murmur, especially an abnormal heart sound heard on auscultation, especially of the carotid artery. |
| murmur | Soft heart humming sound heard between normal beats. |
| rub gallop | Triple sound of a heartbeat, usually indicative of serious heart disease. |
| palpitations | Uncomfortable pulsations of the heart felt as a thumping in the chest. |
| atrioventricular block | Heart block; partial or complete blockage of the electrical impulses from the atrioventricular node to the ventricles. |
| heart block | Partial or complete blockage of the electrical impulses from the atrioventricular node to the ventricles. |
| premature atrial contractions | Atrial contractions that occur before the normal impulse; can be the cause of palpitations. |
| premature ventricular contractions | Ventricular contractions that occur before the normal impulse; can be the cause of palpitations. |
| hypertensive heart disease | Heart disease caused, or worsened, by high blood pressure |
| hypertension | Chronic condition with blood pressure greater than 140/90. |
| high blood pressure | Chronic condition with blood pressure greater than 140/90. |
| hypotension | Chronic condition with blood pressure below normal. |
| low blood pressure | Chronic condition with blood pressure below normal. |
| essential hypertension | High blood pressure without any known cause. |
| secondary hypertension | Hypertension having a known cause, such as kidney disease. |
| hypertensive | Increased blood pressure. |
| hypotension | Chronic condition with blood pressure below normal. |
| blood vessels | carry blood throughout the body |
| asystole | no electrical impulses within the heart |
| heart and lungs | they work together to provide oxygenation throughout the body; when the heart stops functioning, then this creates lung disease |
| CAD coronary artery disease | Chronic condition with blood pressure below normal. |
| aortic stenosis | Narrowing of the aorta. |
| coarctation | Abnormal narrowing of the aorta. |
| stenosis | Narrowing, particularly of blood vessels or of the cardiac valves. |
| pulmonary artery stenosis | Narrowing of the pulmonary artery, preventing the lungs from receiving enough blood from the heart to oxygenate. |
| angina | Angina pectoris. |
| angina pectoris | Chest pain, usually caused by a lowered oxygen or blood supply to the heart. |
| myocardial infarction ( heart attack) | Sudden drop in the supply of blood to an area of the heart muscle, usually due to a blockage in a coronary artery. |
| cardiac arrest | Sudden stopping of the heart; also called asystole. |
| endocarditis | Inflammation of the endocardium, especially an inflammation caused by a bacterial (e.g., staphylococci) or fungal agent. |
| myocarditis | Inflammation of the myocardium. |
| pericarditis | Inflammation of the pericardium. |
| bacterial endocarditis | Bacterial inflammation of the inner lining of the heart. |
| congestive heart failure ( CHF ) | Inability of the heart to pump enough blood out during the cardiac cycle; collection of fluid in the lungs results. |
| pulmonary edema | Abnormal accumulation of fluid in the lungs. Fluid in the air sacs and bronchioles usually caused by failure of the heart to pump enough blood to and from the lungs. |
| intracardiac tumor | A tumor within one of the heart chambers. |
| A tumor within one of the heart chambers. | Disease of the heart muscle. |
| The Da Vinci system | a robotic device that uses tiny cameras with multiple lenses inserted into patient's chest to provide 3-d images of the heart |
