Minoans A civilization that developed on the island of Crete around 2000 B.C.
Mycenaeans A civilization that began around 2000 B.C. and controlled mainland Greece from 1600-1200 B.C.
Dorians More primitive Greeks who moved into fertile areas of the Peloponnesus, Crete, and Southwestern Asia minor after the Mycenaean collapse.
Homer A blind Greek poet who wrote the lliad and the Odyssey around 700s B.C. this period is called the Homeric age.
Zeus king of the Gods; most powerful God; father of some Gods and some humans
Athena Daughter of Zeus; Goddess of wisdom, womanly virtue, and technical skills.
Sparta One of the largest city state in size; was military ideal.
Draco Archon leader in 621 B.C. created the Athens first written law code
Solon A respected and trusted leader, became archon about 594 B.C. medicated to dispute between debtors and creditors.
Peististratus seized power as a tyrant in Athens; failed at two earlier attempts.
Cleisthenes turned Athens into a democracy; divided into 4 different tribes.
Darius ruler of Persia.
Xerxes son of darius had a very large army around 10,000 troops.
Themistocles Athenian leader who persuaded his people to abandon their city and take refuge elsewhere.
Pericles leader in Athens; great general and statesman.

Terracing creating small, flat plots of land by building, low walls on the hillside.
