TermDefinition
Sufism a mystical Islamic tradition or belief that emphasizes a relationship with God. It seeks to achieve closeness to God using various practices like meditation on the Qur’an, fasting, prayering, and avoidance of sin.
Srivijaya Empire a dominant, maritime trading empire that controlled the strategic Strait of Malacca. This empire was able to flourish due to becoming a powerful Buddhist learning and trading center.
Khmer Empire a powerful, Indian-influenced Hindu-Buddhist state centered in present-day Cambodia. This empire was known for its vast water systems, construction of impressive capital cities, and more.
Feudalism a political system where land was granted to nobles, by their kings, in exchange for loyalty, military service, and protection.
Manorial System a socio-economic system in Medieval Europe that centered around the lord’s manor and the serfs and free laborers who worked on it. This system defined the relationship between the lord and their servers.
Serfdom a system of unfree agriculture labor where peasants named serfs were bound to the land they worked on which belonged to the lord who owned the estate.
Crusades a series of holy wars started by European Christians to reclaim Jerusalem and the Holy Land from Muslim rule. These wars had significant impacts on European societies since they ultimately spread culture and increased trade but weren’t successful.
