Medical Terminology Diseases and Conditions
| Term | Definition |

| Autoimmune | A disease that occurs when the body reacts to its own tissue the way it would react to a foreign antigen |
| Acute | An illness that comes quickly; is of short duration (EX: Cold) |
| Benign | Not cancerous, good chance of survival |
| Chronic | Slow onset, usually lifelong (EX: High BP, Type II Diabetes) |
| Congenital | A condition that is present at birth and may be the result of either genetic or environmental factors; (EX: cerebral palsy) |
| Debilitating | Having a weakening or fatiguing effect |
| Endemic | A disease that is ongoing and restricted to a certain population, group or area of land. (EX: Malaria) |
| Endogeneous | An injury or condition that originates within the body; (EX: circulatory disorders, diabetes, and immune system disorders) |
| Epidemic | Sudden widespread outbreak of disease within a population, group or area of land |
| Exogenous | An injury or condition that originates outside the body; (EX: trauma) |
| Genetic | Inherited or passed on from one's parents |
| Iatrogenic | Illness related to medical examination or treatment |
| Idiopathic | Disease with an unknown cause |
| Immunological | A protein that the body makes in response to an antigen |
| Infectious | Capable of causing an infection |
| Inflammatory | Marked by inflammation (EX: redness, heat, fever, and swelling) or caused by inflammation |
| Ischemic | When blood flow is restricted to a part of the body, that part is said to be ischemic |
| Malignant | Cancers that tend to spread, get progressively worse and could be life-threatening |
| Metabolic | A disorder that interferes with normal metabolism, the chemical processes involved in converting food to energy and in sustaining life; (EX: diabetes) |
| Nosocomial | Hospital acquired infection |
| Nutritional | Relating to chemical processes in the body that occur after ingesting (eating) food |
| Opportunistic | Infections that occur more often or are more severe in patients with weakened immune systems |
| Pandemic | When a particular disease affects the global population (EX: Covid) |
| Syndrome | A set of signs or symptoms that occur together as part of a disease process |
| Terminal | Disease for which there are treatments but no cure |
| Neoplastic | New abnormal growth- could be cancerous or noncancerous |
| Etiology | Cause of disease |
| Hypersensitivity | A condition in which the body’s immune system has an exaggerated response to an antigen, a substance that is harmful or perceived by the body to be harmful; (EX: allergy) |
| Convalescence | A period of gradual recovery after illness or injury |
