Health Literacy and Medical Terminology(Integumentary System)

TermDefinition
Epidermis the outer most layer, the one that is visible it is made of large cells that look like scales of a fish under a microscope
Dermis the deeper layer of skin, this layer is much thicker than the epidermis, has fewer cells and more thick fibers to give the skin strength/flexibility.
Sweat Glands release sweat to rid the body of waste and to cool the body
Sebaceous Glands secrete oil as a natural moisturizer for the skin and hair
EMS (emergency medical services) provides urgent pre hospital treatment and stabilization for serious illness and injuries, as well transport patients to definitive care
Sten/o narrowing
keratin protein found in the hair and nails that promotes hardness
Derm/o, Dermat/o, Cutane/o means "skin"
hidradenitis inflammation of sweat glands
ENT(ear,nose and throat) diagnosis and treatment of disorders related to ear, nose and throat
Kawasaki disease blood vessels inflammation named after Dr. Tomisaku Kawasaki
Necrosis accidental cell death
PICU(pediatric intensive care unit) provides intensive critical care to infants, children, and young adults
ICU(intensive care unit) provides critical care to patients
sebace/o oil
lip/o fat
