Types of Muscle Bellies and joints
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Joint (articulation) | Is the point of contact between bones. A joints structure determines its functions. |
| Ball- and- socket joint | A spherical surface of one bone fits into the dish-shaped depression of another bone. ( Such a joint is a capable of movement in every plane.) |
| Ellipsoid joint | Consist of the oval -shaped end of one bone. It permits flexion and abduction/ adduction. |
| Hinge joint | Allows only flexion and extension, similar to the movements of a door hinge. |
| Saddle joint | Is a modified ellipsoid joint, composed of convex and concave articulating surfaces - like two saddles. |
| Gliding joint | Is usually between two flat surfaces and allows the least movement of all synovial joints . Only small shifting movements are possible at these articulations |
| Pivot joint | Is designed to allow one bone to rotate around the surface of another bone. |
