QuestionAnswer
What is the function of the vent? Is it common to all poultry? The vent is where the pee, poop, and eggs exit. Yes, all poultry have one.
In order for a female to lay eggs, does she need the presence of a male? No, only for fertile eggs to be produced.
In what part of the hen's reproductive tract is the shell produced? The uterus OR shell gland.
What is a pullet? A female chicken under 6 months that doesn't produce eggs.
What is a hen? A female chicken over 6 months that produces eggs.
What is a cockerel? A male chicken under 6 months.
What is a cock (rooster)? A male chicken over 6 months.
What is a capon? A castrated male chicken.
What is the importance of calcium in the diet of laying hens? The calcim is needed for the calcium in the egg shells.
What precautions must be taken when introducing new birds into your home flock? First check for disease, then quarantine for 3 weeks, lastly check for symptoms.
What are the differences between adult female and male chicken feathers? Female: Short, blunt hackle feathers whith no saddle or sickle feathers. Male: Long, sharp hackle, saddle, and sickle feathers.
Other than feathers what other anomical features do male chickens have? Large combs and wattles, colors, and spurs.
What major external parasites are common to poultry? Lice and mites.
How do you perform a parasite check on poultry? Check the vent, under wings, on skin, under feathers.
If you found external parasites how should you treat them? Clean pens, put in fresh bedding, sprinkle Sevin powder on bedding, and spray chickens with Adams flee and tick spray.
What are the two other names for the breast bone of chickens? Sternum OR keel.
How many eggs can a chicken lay in one year? 365, one a day.
What nutrients do chickens and other poultry require each day? Protein, carbohydrate, fat, minerals, vitamins, water, and oxygen.
What are the most common feed ingredients used in poultry diets in the U. S.? Corn and soybean meal.
