Body Positions

Abduct A body part moves away from the midline of the body Ex: Raising your arm
Adduct A body part moves towards the midline of the body Ex: Lowering your arm
Proximal Closer to the center of your body Ex: Up my arms/legs
Distal Further from the center of your body Ex: Down my arms/legs
Prone Laying flat on the abdomen, face down, palms facing down Ex: Getting a massage
Fowler’s position Head raised to an angle of 45-90 degrees with slightly bent knees Ex: Hospital bed when you need to sit up
Lithotomy position Lying on your back, legs raised, knees bent Ex: Me with my legs on the wall
Knee-elbow position Knees on the ground, elbows on the ground, chest and abdomen off the ground Ex: Hands and knees except elbow
Supine position Laying on your back Ex: Sleeping on your back
Dorsal recumbent position Laying on your back with their knees bent, feet flat on the ground Ex: Starting position of crutches
Sims’ position Lying on your left side, right knee and hip flexed, left hip and knee slightly extended Ex: Me when I sleep on my left side
