What's Viet Minh? Revolutionary group that wanted Vietnam’s independence.
What's Viet Cong? Vietnamese Communist guerrillas, led by Ho Chi Minh.
What battle did The Viet Minh defeat the French at? Dien Bien Phu.
Vietnam was divided into two countries at what parallel? 17th parallel.
What type of government did North Vietnam have? Communists.
What was the capital of North Vietnam? Hanoi.
Who led North Vietnam? Viet Minh & later Ho Chi Minh
Who supported North Vietnam? China and the USSR.
What type of government did South Vietnam have? A democratic government.
What was the capital of South Vietnam? Saigon.
Who led South Vietnam? Bao Dai & later Diem.
Who supported South Vietnam? The US & Western democracies.
What two countries were formed at this time? Countries of Laos and Cambodia formed at this time.
Why did the war break out? Elections to reunite the country under one gov’t supposed to be held in 1956. When the elections were not held, war broke out.
Who is Bao Dai? Emperor & puppet of the French (ineffective & failed).
Who's Diem? Declared S. Vietnam a republic (nepotism).
Who's Ho Chi Minh? Harsh Communist dictator.
What year did the Vietnam war begin and end? (1957-1975)
What were Communist guerrillas called? Viet Cong.
What villages did Viet Cong attack? Villages in the South.
What did Vietcong want? They wanted to unite as one communist country.
What country did U.S. President John F. Kennedy (JFK) sent 900 “advisors” to? South Vietnam.
A military coup overthrew who? Diem in the South.
What's Ho Chi Minh Trail? The system of trails, running through Laos & Cambodia, that supplied the communists in the south.
What's The Gulf of Tonkin Incident? U.S. President Lyndon Johnson (LBJ) claimed U.S. ships were attacked in the Gulf of Tonkin (possibly provoked, debatable, & never confirmed). As a result, Johnson increased U.S. involvement & ordered airstrikes against the North.
What year did the first U.S. ground combat forces (Marines) entered the war? 1965.
What's Operation “Rolling Thunder”? U.S. B-52 bombers made thousands of bombing raids on enemy bases.
What's the Tet offensive? The communists’ attack on the South during the Vietnamese New Year celebration; made the war seem endless to Americans.
What were three American protests & anti-war demonstrations, marches, “sit-ins” Kent State Burning of draft cards & draft dodgers “Hanoi Jane”
Why did President Johnson did not seek re-election? American protests & anti-war demonstrations, marches, “sit-ins” and high war costs.
What's Vietnamization? U.S. President Richard Nixon’s policy in 1969 to reduce U.S. involvement & increased training programs for S. Vietnamese troops.
What's Fall of Saigon? Vietnam War ends, as S. Vietnamese surrender to the Communists on April 30, 1975; capital renamed Ho Chi Minh City.
