What was the Cold War? A conflict of words and ideas between nations rather than armies.
What are Super Powers? A nation that is one of the world's most powerful.
What's containment? The policy of preventing a country from gaining control of another country.
What was the Truman Doctrine? Said that the United States would give money and supplies to help any nation that wanted to keep the Soviets/Communists out.
What's the marshall plan? Also known as the European Recovery Act, which provided $12 billion dollars to help the European countries rebuild their economies after the war.
Who set up the Berlin blockade? Soviets.
What did the Allies do to get around the blockade? Airlifted supplies to the people in Berlin.
What's NATO? North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
What's the Warsaw pact? A military alliance formed by the Soviet Union and several Eastern European nations in 1955.
When did the Korean War begin and end? 1950-1953.
What is the Korean War known as? The "forgotten war".
What was North Korea's government during the Korean War? Communists.
What's North Korea's capital? P'yongyang.
Who supported North Korea during the war? China and the USSR.
Who was North Korea's leader? Kim Il Sung.
What was South Korea's government during the Korean War? Democratic.
What's South Korea's capital? Seoul.
Who supported South Korea during the war? The UN and US.
Who was South Korea's leader. Dr. Syngman Rhee.
What's a DMZ? (demilitarized zone).
Who did North Korea try to invade and why? North Korean Communist forces crossed the 38th Parallel - a DMZ (demilitarized zone) and invaded South Korea, trying to make the entire country communist; this was an act of war.
Who did U.S. President Harry S. Truman sent US troops to support? South Korea.
What is the Inchon Landing? A daring, surprise, amphibious landing led by US Gen. MacArthur that turned the tide of the war by landing behind enemy lines.
What's limited war? A war in which total victory is not the goal. Such limitations make it less likely that nuclear weapons are used.
What year did both sides signed a truce ending the Korean War? 1953
What was the purpose of the Berlin Wall? To stop the escape of the East Germans.
Did the US believe in the Domino theory? Yes.
What was the Domino theory? President Eisenhower’s fear that “all of Southeast Asia will fall like a row of dominos” if the US did not stop the spread of communism.
Who was the Arms race and space race between? US and USSR.
