AHS Ch.1 Key Terms

| Amoral | A person lacking or is indifferent to moral standards. |
| Applied Ethics | Practicals acts of moral standards that are meant to benefit the patient |
| Bioethicists | Gives thought to ethical concerns that often examine the more abstract dimensions of ethical issues & dilemmas |
| Bioethics | Applied ethics from modern medical advances & research |
| Comparable Worth | Pay equity to both genders who are doing equal work |
| Compassion | The ability to have a gentle, caring attitude toward patients and fellow employee's |
| Due Process | Entitlement of employee's of the gov. & public companies to have procedure followed when one believe's their rights are in jeopardy |
| Duty-Based ethics | Performs one's duty to various people & institutions such as parents, employee's, & customers |
| Empathy | Objective awareness of the feelings, emotions, & behavior of another person |
| Ethics | Making choices about what we should or ought to do, and out the common good above self-interest |
| Fidelity | Loyalty & faithfulness to others |
| Indigent | Impoverished enough to quality (not yet 65) |
| Integrity | dedicated to maintaining high standards, or unwavering adherence to one's prinicples |
| Justice-based ethics | No one person is advantaged or disadvantaged. "The veil of Ignorance" |
| Laws | Rules or actions prescribed by an authority such as the federal gov. & court sys. that have a binding legal force. |
| Medical ethics | Principles regulating the behaviors of health care professionals, and the community at large |
| Medical etiquette | Standards of professional behavior that physicians practice in their relations & conduct w/ patients & other physicians |
| Medical practice acts | Defines what constitutes unprofessional conduct in that particular state. |
| Morality | Quality of being virtuous or practicing the right conduct |
| Precedent | The decision of a case acts as a model for any future cases in which the facts are the same |
| Autonomy | People have the right to make decisions about their own life |
| Beneficence | The ability to do good to others for their benefit |
| Justice | Fairness in all out actions with other people |
| Nonmalfeasance | Do no harm |
| Quality Assurance | Gathering info & evaluating info about services provided as well as results achieved, comparing info w/ accepted standards |
| Right-based ethics | Individual rights belong to all people purely by virtue of their being human |
| Sanctity of Life | All humans must be protected, become an advocate for people who cannot speak out for themselves (kids, elderly) |
| Sexual Harrasment | Unwelcome sexual advances, request for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature |
| Sympathy | Feeling sorry or pity for someone else |
| Tolerance | A respect for those whose opinions, practices, race, religion, & nationality differ from our own. |
| Utilitarianism | Guiding principle of the greatest good for the greatest # of people |
| Virtue-Based ethics | Good character traits such as integrity, trust, respect, empathy, generosity, truthfulness, and the ability to admit mistakes |
