Nonsterile Compounding
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Surfactant | Lowers the surface tension between two ingredients to make them more miscible |
| Wetting agents/levigating agents | Reduce the surface tension between a liquid and a solid |
| Suspending agents | Added to a suspension to keep the solid particles from settling |
| Emulsifiers | Added to emulsions (two or more immiscible liquids) to help keep the liquid droplets dispersed throughout the liquid vehicle |
| The Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Balance | HLB ranges from 0-20. HLB < 10 = more lipid-soluble. HLB > 10 = more water-soluble |
| Binders | Allow the contents of a tablet to stick together while permitting release once ingested |
| Preservatives | Prevent microorganism growth |
| Buffers | Keep pH within a certain range |
| Emollients | Products that soften and smooth the skin. Ointments are for extremely dry skin & thick skin Creams are usually best fit for normal and dry skin Lotions have the most water and are best for oily skin |
