Evacuated system Consists of a double-pointed needle, a plastic needle holder/adapter, and collection tubes. Creates a slight vacuum to transport blood from vein to tube. Used to obtain multiple tubes of blood with one venipuncture stick
Evacuated system: Vacutainer needle sizes & lengths Gauge: 20 to 22 Length: 3/4 to 1 1/2 in
Winged infusion set/Butterfly system Consists of flexible wings attached to a needle with 5 to 12 inches of flexible tubing that connects the needle to the collection device. Best for patients with small or fragile patients (typically the elderly). Tends to cause less trauma/bruising.
Winged infusion set/Butterfly system: Butterfly needle sizes & lengths Gauge: 21 to 23 Length: 1/2 to 3/4 in
Needle syringe system Consists of a needle and syringe; used to draw blood from a vein manually. Only a small amount of blood may be obtained with this method. Suction is controlled by syringe plunger.

Laboratory use: Yellow Blood or body fluid cultures
Laboratory use: Light blue Coagulation testing
Laboratory use: Red Serum test; chemistry studies; blood bank; immunology
