Global Harmonized System (GHS) Standard way to classify & label chx to make it easier to understand.
Safety Data Sheets (SDS) Provides info about working w/ or handling a chx substance. Consistent w/16sections
What does group 1-8 on the SDS contain? 1-8 contain general info about the chx, identification, hazards, composition, safe handling practices, and emergency control measures.
What does group 9-11 & 16 on the SDS contain? 9-11 &16 contain info on physical & chx properties, stability & reactivity info, tox info, exposure control info
What does group 12-15 on the SDS contain? Used with the GHS
Why are safety signs, symbols, & labels used? Proper labeling ensures that chx, waste, & other materials in the lab are disposed of properly in the correct bins
Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Regulatory standards for all lab testing performed on humans as well as regulating testing of specimens in the lab setting
Center of Disease Control (CDC) collects data on pathogens and diseases; helps establish guidelines to prevent the spread of them
Universal Precautions Standard! Helps to create guidelines for contact with blood & body fluids AIDS & HIV
Point of Care Testing Performed out of the lab(bedside/near site of pt) provides rapid/reliable result. Example: Blood glucose testing for diabetes, Urine hcg test
Quality Assurance (QA) Evaluates services & the results compared w. standards such as; pt ID, pt prep & specimen collection, specimen processing & transportation, Instrumental & technical performance, Safety, in-service training & education of health care personnel
Quality Control (QC) Assess testing procedures, reagents, & technique of the person performing the tests. Ex: All test kits for CLIA-waived tests comes with reagents that describes how to perform a QC test
What should your work attire be when being safe personally? Appropriate attire, PPE, UTD Immunization, Knowing where & how to read SDS, dispose of sharps in sharps bin, know protocols for bio waste
What is needed in a Spill Kit? Bag, coag. powder, scooper, biohazard bag.
What ratio or percentage of bleach should you clean a spill with? 1:2 or 10%
How often does the FD do a walk-through? Once when you first move in, then annually
What is the hemoglobin range for Males & Females? M: 12-17g/dL F: 12-16g/dL Under 10 -->test for anemia (S&S SOB & dizziness) Under 5--> incompatible w/ life
What is the hematocrit range for Males & Females? M:42-52% F: 36-48% Also tests for anemia (small tube w/ sealing tube @ the bottom) Centrifuged for >5mins
What tests are performed in blood draws? CBC, WBC, ESR, Glucose & Tolerance Testing, Hemoglobin, Cholesterol
What is important to know about ESR? Give the time it was given, reading the test early gives a false -, reading it late gives a false +, females typically have higher ESR rates than males
What is Immunology? The study of the body's ability to prevent & fight infections
What are the functions of Immunoassays? Measures the amt. of antigens & antibodies present in relation to an illness
Patient education: Avoid what their allergic to, encourage developing good health habits, read labels carefully, Take only prescribed meds, Carry Epipen at all times if sensitive to certain substances
