| Berlin Wall | a concrete barrier that separated West and East Berlin to prevent migration of people. |
| Domino Theory | the US idea that if communism spreads to one country, it will also spread to every neighboring country. |
| Deterrence | using threats of violence to prevent an enemy from making a certain decision |
| Iron Curtain | the USSR’s attempt to prevent communist Eastern Europe countries from trade and contact from capitalist countries. |
| NATO | an alliance of capitalist countries in North America and Western Europe to stop communism and rebuild militaries of Europe |
| Space Race | a competition between the USA and USSR to achieve spaceflight |
| Superpower | a country that possesses the economy, military, and political power to control politics across the world. |
| Warsaw Pact | an alliance of communist countries formed in response to NATO to promote communism, defend against NATO, and help industrialize new countries. |
| Containment | the US policy meant to prevent the spread of Communism to new nations, usually with military force |
| Divide and Conquer | a tactic used by empires to control a colony by having the conquered people turn against each other. |
| Home Rule | an anti-colonial idea that advocates for control of colonies by the people living in the colonies. |
| Liberal Economics | economics that supports free markets, private property, and private wealth over a command economy |
| Neocolonialism | when a rich country uses their economic/political power to control a weaker country without force |
| Settler Colonialism | when colonizers replace the indigenous people of the land, usually done with violence and deportations |
| Terrorism | using violence against civilians or civilian infrastructure in order to cause fear to achieve a political goal |
| NonAligned Movement | countries that neither wanted to ally with the USA or the USSR |
| Nuclear Proliferation | the expanding of countries that have nuclear weapons. |
| Civil disobedience | refusal to follow certain laws or pay taxes and fines to protest a government. |
| General Strike | a large organized strike in many different industries to achieve a political goal |
| Guerrilla tactics | a style of fighting in which small groups of soldiers ambush, sabotage, and trap larger groups of soldiers |
