who were the first people in a town traders
name 3 reasons for the growth of towns 1. Europe's population growth; 2. the growth of trade; 3. towns were a place of opportunity

why did traders settle in a town? they wanted a permanent place in which to sell and to live in the off season
what happened when a town began to expand beyond it's wall space? old walls might come down so new ones could be built or the town would build outside of the walls
who gave a town a charter? the lord
what is a town charter? a legal document listing the privileges of the townspeople
what did Europeans use spices for? to clean your teeth, deodorant, medicine, add flavor to food
what 6 countries border France on the east? Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Monaco
what is France's climate? temperate
what is bartering? when people trade for items they cannot grow or make themselves
who sparked foreign trade? the crusaders
who provided produce for the craftsmen and merchants at the town market? farmers
what are money changers? Different types of money was used from town to town so money changers were people who knew the values of the different coins and they would exchange money from other towns for local coins
where do we get our word bank? from the Italian word, banca, meaning bench (money changers sat on benches)
what are letters of credit? merchants would exchange money for a letter of credit equal to the amount of money so they wouldn't have to travel with large sums of cash.
what is an apprentice? a young boy who went to work and live in the home and shop of a master craftsman so he could lean his master's trade.
what is a journeyman? after his apprenticeship, a journeyman hired himself out to work for other tradesmen, sometimes traveling from town to town to seek work.
where did the word journeyman come from? from the French words meaning "a day's work"
define masterpiece the best piece of work a journeyman has ever done
how did a person earn the title "master"? when the members of a guild examined a journeyman's work and felt it was truly a masterpiece, they gave him the title "master"
what could a guild member do? he could open his own shop and teach others his trade.
what are the functions of a guild? made sure people charged a fair price and value for their craft; they helped the sick and elderly members; they became the center of the town's social life;
what kinds of things did the townspeople enjoy? holidays that included parades, banquets, and sports
what were townspeople's homes like? usually small, often having only 1 or 2 rooms with little furniture. Some built their homes on bridges, on the town wall, or in the moat
name 2 dangers in a town, and what caused them 1. Fire - because most of the buildings were made of wood; 2. Disease - because of overcrowding, narrow streets, and poor sanitation
define Black Death, including another name for it. The Bubonic Plague - an epidemic that killed many people in the 14th century
Define friar, and tell what the Latin root is. an order or rank of clergy who lived in a monastery. It comes from the Latin word frater, meaning brother
what is a monastery? a place in or near the town where friars lived
what are the 2 orders of friars that are still in existence today? The Dominicans and the Franciscans
what building was a symbol of the town's spirit? the cathedral
describe the features of a Romanesque cathedral: a roof of rounded vaults; thick stone walls; small windows that let in little light; painted walls & colorful tapestries but very dark & cold
describe the features of a Gothic cathedral high roofs with flying buttresses; thin walls; big windows making it light and airy; stained glass windows
what are flying buttresses? props attached to the outside walls of a Gothic cathedral to add support
describe 2 topographical sections in France in the north and west are broad plains, hills and low plateaus; In the south and east, higher plateaus and mountains are found.
how did the growth of towns change the world economically and politically? the rigidness of class division would break down, and the ability to work to improve financially and politically would become a reality.
what is a barter economy? a person traded goods rather than money for goods or services. If they needed something they didn't grow or make, they traded for it.
what is a cash economy? People use money to buy what they want.
explain the 1st step to becoming a guild member 1. a young boy (apprentice) lived & worked in the home and shop of the master craftsman, or guild member for 2 - 10 years. Than he became a journeyman.
explain the 2nd step to becoming a guild member After his apprenticeship, he became a journeyman and hired himself out to other master for 2 short periods.
explain the final step to becoming a guild member when the journeyman excelled in his trade, he was tested before the craft guild. He had to present his masterpiece and the guild examined it. If it was truly a masterpiece, he was given the title of a master
how were stained glass windows made patient craftsmen spent many weeks making the colored glass and then fitting it into patterns held together by lead
