| Cold War | A period of political and military tension between the US and the USSR from 1947 to 1991. |
| superpower | A powerful and influential nation, especially one of the two major powers during the Cold War. |
| bipolar world | A global division into two opposing political and ideological camps, led by the US and USSR. |
| iron curtain | A term for the division between Western Europe (capitalist) and Eastern Europe (communist). |
| containment | A U.S. strategy to prevent the spread of communism during the Cold War. |
| Truman Doctrine | A U.S. policy promising support to countries resisting communism, starting with Greece and Turkey. |
| Marshall plan | A U.S. program giving aid to rebuild European economies after WWIl to prevent communism. |
| NATO | A military alliance formed in 1949 between Western countries to counter the Soviet threat. |
| Warsaw Pact | A Soviet-led military alliance formed in 1955 in response to NATO. |
| Proxy War | A conflict where two opposing countries support different sides but don't directly fight each other. |
| Cuban Missile Crisis | A 1962 crisis where the US and USSR nearly went to nuclear war over Soviet missiles in Cuba. |
| Nuclear arms race | The competition between the US and USSR to build more powerful nuclear weapons. |
| Space race | A competition between the US and USSR to explore and dominate outer space. |
| Domino Theory | The belief that if one country fell to communism, others in the region would follow. |
| Soviet-Afghan War | A 1979-1989 conflict where the USSR invaded Afghanistan and faced resistance backed by the US. |
| Propaganda | Information, often biased or misleading, used to promote a political cause or point of view. |
| Ho Chi Minh | Vietnamese communist leader who led the fight for independence from France and later the US. |
| Kim Il Sung | Korean communist leader who led the fight to dominate Korea. |
| Contra War | Conflict in Nicaragua where the US-backed rebel groups fought the socialst Sandinista government. |
| Bay of Pigs | Failed invasion of Cuba orchestrated by the US, to overthrow Fidel Castro's communist government |
| Satellite country | Country that is officially independent but is politically and economically dominated by another country |
