Activity tolerance Type and amount of exercise or work that a person is able to perform without undue exertion or injury
Atelectasis Complete or partial collapse of a lung or a section (lobe) of a lung
Foot drop difficulty lifting the front part of the foot
Hemi Walker for patients that don't need a full walker and provides wider base for support
Hemiplegia Muscle weakness or partial paralysis on one side of the body that can affect the arms, legs, and facial muscles.
Contracture A permanent tightening of the muscles, tendons, skin, and nearby tissues that causes the joints to shorten and become very stiff.
Muscle atrophy wasting or loss of muscle tissue
Venous thromboembolism blood clots in the veins
Acupressure The application of pressure or localized massage to specific sites on the body to control symptoms such as pain or nausea. It is a type of complementary and alternative medicine.
Idiopathic Pain pain that has no specific or determinable cause or which has multiple etiologies, meaning the causes may be biological, physiological, psychological, psycho-social or any combination of these
Patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) Drug delivery system that allows patients to self administer analgesic medications on demand within a therapeutic range
Pseudoaddiction term that refers to patients who have under-treated pain and exhibit drug-seeking behavior that is misinterpreted as addiction.
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) Technique in which a battery powered device blocks pain impulses from reaching the spinal cord by delivering weak electrical impulses directly to the surface of the skin
Placebos Dosage form that contains no pharmacologically active ingredients but may relieve pain through psychological effects
Primary intention Primary union of the edges of a wound, progressing to complete scar formation without granulation
Secondary intention Wound closure in which the edges are separated; granulation tissue develops to fill the gap, and finally epithelium grows in over the granulation, producing a larger scar than results with primary intention
Purulent drainage that is thick and can be green, yellow, brown or tan
Sanguineous bright red drainage, indicates active bleeding
Serous clear, watery plasma
Negative pressure wound therapy supports wound healing by reduction of edema and fluid removal, macro deformation and wound contraction, and micro deformation and mechanical stretch perfusion.
Vacuum-assisted closure Device that helps in wound closure by applying localized negative pressure to draw the edges of a wound together
Conscious sedation administration of CNS-depressant drugs or analgesics to relieve anxiety and/or provide amnesia during surgical, diagnostic, or interventional procedures
Sequential Compression Device (SDC's) inflatable sleeves that are worn on lower legs while recovering from an illness or surgery in the hospital to help prevent the development of deep vein thrombosis.
Never event Serious incidents that are wholly preventable because guidance or safety recommendations that provide strong systemic protective barriers are available at a national level and should have been implemented by all health care providers
Debridement Removal of dead tissue from a wound
Fistula Abnormal passage from an internal organ to the surface of the body or between two internal organs
Hyperbaric involves exposing the body to 100% oxygen at a pressure that is greater than normal to help wounds heal properly and speed healing.
Fluctuance Soft, boggy feeling when tissue is palpated, usually a sign of tissue infection
Serosangieous type of drainage that is pale pink and watery
Evisceration Protrusion of visceral organs through a surgical wound
