VocabularyDefinition
Depression/Great Depression The economic decline that began in the 1929 and was the worst in the worlds history.
New deal Franklin D. Roosevelts's plan for getting the United States out of the Great Depression.
Treaty of Versailles The treaty that was signed in 1919 to end WWI.One of the causes of WWII.
Fourteen Points President Woodrow Wilsons ideas to end all future world wars.
Russian Revolution The action led by Lenin that replaced Czarist Russia with a communist goverment.
Communism All property and all means of production belong to the people as a group, private property does not exist and all goods are shared eqally.
Democracy Rule by the people.
Dictators A ruler with absolute power and authority(Hitler and Mussolini in WWII.)
Blitzrieg "Lighting war", German tactic used in World War Two Based on speed and surprised and needed a Mulitary force to be based around light tank units supported by planes and infantry (foot soliders.)
Alliances When a country aligns with another country against a 3rd country.
Isolationism Americas policy of noninvolvment in European wars and avoidance of "entangling allances."
Appeasement Policy of giving into the demands of countries in the hopes of avoiding a war.
Allies Great Britain, United States and Russia during WWII.
Axiz powers Germany,Italy and Japans alliance during WWII.
Theaters of Conflict Different fornts where a country is fighting. (For example in WWII the US fought in both Europe and the Pacific Theaters.)
Atomic Bomb (Manhattan Project) A weapon of mass destruction 1st used by america against Japan WWII(US code name for making the 1st atom bomb).
Holocaust The killing of an entire group of people planned by a government.(German's plan for getting rid of all the Jewish people).
Holocaust The name now used for the mass killing of Jewish people by Nazi Germany.
United Nations An international peace keeping organization that came into use at the end of WWII that would help prevent future wars.
Cold War A conflict of words and ideas between nations rather then armies.
Containment American policy to keep the soviets from gaining control of weak countries.
Arms Race A competition among nations to get the most weapons. (especially nuclear weapons)
Domino Theory 20th century foreign policy that believed if one country came under the influence of Communists, then more countries would follow.
Israel Palestine Country set up for the HJewish people after WWI. Country was split to make Israel.
Detente The policy to relax tensions between the communists and the free world.
Cuban Missile Crisis A very tense confrontation between the Soviet Union and the United States over the Soviet deployment of nucleur missiles in Cuba.
Space Race An informal but serious competition between the United States and the Soviet Union to be the first to explore outer space.
NATO North Atlantic Treaty Organization- an organization of America and most European countries for collective security establised in 1949.
