| Root | the basic meaning of a term. a medical term can have multiple roots. |
| Combining Vowel | Adds a root to a root or a root to a suffix |
| Suffix | adds additional meaning to the end of a term |
| If a ....... begins in a vowel,(A,E,I,O,U) do not use a combining vowel | Suffix, Example: Hepat/itis Hepat = Liver, itis=inflammation |
| Direction Read | Read a medical term from rear to the front example: Electro/cardio/gram; the record (gram) of the electricity (electro) of the heart (cardio) |
| Myocarditis | inflammation (itis) of the muscle (myo) of the heart (cardi) |
| Combining Form | a root plus a combining vowel is combining form |
