Cutting animals in half? Part of the covenantal ritual, torn animal signifies the punishment if one goes against the covenant
Floating smoking flower pot? Represents God, He swears to fulfill his promises to Abraham or he will be torn
Sarah? Abraham’s wife
Sarah’s problem? She is infertile
Hagar & Ishmael? Sarah’s handmaiden offered to Abraham, their son, they are both banished by Sarah
Isaac? Means laughter, Sarah conceives him miraculously and receives the covenantal blessing
How is Isaac similar to Jesus? Types of each other, both beloved who carry wood to be sacrificed at the same place
What is special about Mt. Moriah in the Old & New Testament? Place where Isaac and Jesus endure the test of faith
Explain how Jerusalem got its name Originally called Salem (peace in Hebrew) but after Isaac and Abraham passed the test on Mt. Moriah, Abraham renamed the place Yahweh-yireh (God will provide) b/c Jews don’t want to say God’s name, they call the city “Yireh-Salem” = Jerusalem
Wheat is the main question in Genesis after Abraham & Isaac? When will the promises be fulfilled
Jacob’s 12 children become: 12 Tribes of Israel
Isaac marries Rebekah but… Rebekah is infertile
What does God tell to Rebekah about the twins in her womb? They will be come 2 nations, and the elder shall serve the younger
Why does God prefer/choose the younger sons? To show his power so that we may trust him

How does Jacob get Isaac’s blessing? He pretends to be Esau
Explain how Jacob experienced payback… His uncle tricks him, and his sons deceive him
What does God show Jacob in his dream? Stairway to Heaven
What does God tell Jacob? “I will fulfill the covenant though you, do not be afraid, trust me”
How does Jacob get his name change? He wrestled with God in a mystical vision
Israel means… One who struggles with God
How is Joseph a type of Jesus? Sold out by his brothers, and forgives him brothers
Genesis ends with… God’s chosen people living large in Egypt, but that’s not meant to be the final destination
Judah is promised… The covenantal blessing through his line, kings
Jesus will come as… The Royal Son of David and the Lion of the tribe of Judah
What is important to remember about the promised land? The Promised Gift is good, the Giver is infinitely better
Evil is… The absence of good, a choice, not an entity
Deadly Sins? Pride is the worst, Envy, Sloth, Wrath, Greed, Gluttony, Lust - They will kill your soul
Lively Virtues? Love is the best, Hope, Faith, Prudence, Justice, Fortitude, Moderation - They will fill your soul
Grace? Love of God, free gift, perfect nature
Who has Jacob slept with? Leah, Bilhah, Zilpah & Rachel
Leah’s kids? Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun and Dinah
Bilhah’s kids? Dan, Naphtali
Zilpah’s kids? Gad and Asher
Rachel’s kids? Joseph and Benjamin
Examples of God making people’s crooked lines straight? Jacob wrestled with God and became Israel, Joseph was sold into slavery and governed Egypt, Abraham and Sarah could not have a child, but did through God
Genesis family tree? Adam & Eve - Cain, Abel, Seth - Noah - Ham, Shem, Japeth - Nimrod - Abraham
Laban? Rebekah’s brother who tricked Jacob into marrying Leah
