Organs and Organ Systems
| Term | Definition |

| Organs | two or more kinds of tissue, together performing special body functions |
| Nervous system | made up of the brain, spinal cord, nerves |
| Integumentary system | includes the hair, skin, and nails. Provides external protective covering over the body |
| Musculoskeletal system | body's skeleton protects vital body organs and provides structure to the body. Blood cells are formed within the bones of the skeletal system. The muscular system provides movement of the body. |
| Lymphatic sytem | includes bone marrow, thymus. lymphatic vessels, |
| Respiratory system | Includes the nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs. This system allows breathing and keeps the blood supplied with oxygen while removing carbon dioxide. The respiratory system is also known as the pulmonary system. |
| Digestive system | Includes the oral cavity, esophagus, liver, stomach, small intestines, large intestines, rectum, and anus. This system breaks down food for fuel to the body. |
| Nervous system | the brain, sensory receptors, spinal cord, and nerves control the body to respond to internal and external changes. |
| Endocrine system | the pineal gland, pituitary gland, thyroid gland, thymus, adrenal gland, pancreas, ovaries, and testes. This system's glands secrete hormones that regulate bodily processes in coordination w/ the nervous system. Two systems together can be referred to as the neuroendocrine system. |
| Cardiovascular System | the heart and blood vessels move blood throughout the body |
| Male reproductive system | the prostate gland, ductus deferens, scrotum, penis, and testes |
| Female reproductive system | the mammary glands, ovary, uterus, vagina and uterine tube |
