Unit 5 - Imperialism Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Colony an area under control of another country and occupied by settlers from that country.
Conquer to take control using the military
Dominate to have a commanding influence over another
Empire a group of countries under a single supreme authority
Manufactured goods products made by processing raw materials into finished goods.
Market an area or arena where goods can be bought and sold.
Missionary a religious leader with the purpose of converting others to their religion.
Natural Resources materials or substances that occur in nature and can be used for economic gain
Raw Materials natural resources used in the production or manufacturing of goods.
Resistance attempts to prevent something by action or argument
Territory an area under the control of a ruler or a state
Treaty a formal agreement between countries, usually to end a conflict
Genocide intentional and organized destruction of a national, ethnic, racial, religious, or political group.
Sphere of Influence an area in which another country has the power to direct its future without having any formal authority.
Protectorate a state that is controlled and protected by another
Imperialism actions that extend a country’s power and influence through diplomacy or military force
Deforestation the clearing of forests or large areas of trees
Surplus more than what is needed.
Extraterritoriality the power of a country to apply its laws outside of its borders.
