Imperialism Key Terms (Vocab: world history

TermDefinition
Imperialism : country takes control of another country, influencing its politics or economy for its benefit
Protectorate: country that manages own internal matters but relies on another country for protection from outside threats
Sphere of influence: one or more countries have power over another country’s politics, economy, and society, shaping its behavior, trade, and government
Rebellion : uprisings against unfair political,social, or economic conditions.
Trade Deficit : country buys more than it sells.
Indemnity: money paid by a defeated country to the winner as compensation for war damages
Extraterritoriality: foreigner is not subject to local laws and can’t be prosecuted for breaking them
Sepoy: Indian peasant soldiers who workjed as mercenaries since the 1450s
Colonialism: one country controls another by setting up colonies or settlements,often after a war.
Genocide : delibrate killing of a whole national,ethnic, or religious group.
Annexation :one country takes in another country or territory into its domain.
Sovereignty: state's ultimate power to govern itself
Racism: belief that some races are superior to others,leading to prejudice or discrimination
